![]() ![]() Highlights of the album Vulnicura honestly include all of the first six tracks. I appreciate it even more since Utopia came out as a counterpoint to its darkness. I don't listen to it as often as those two but it keeps getting better with time. ![]() Overall, I feel comfortable saying that the album compares favorably with Debut or Post. But it's just not as intriguing as the early parts of the album because they don't deal lyrically with the story of her heartbreak. Those songs are still dark they still talk about stuff that really hurt Björk recently. My only real complaint is that I actually wish that the last few tracks did not change the subject matter. Once you really get into its weirdness, this is actually a pretty great album. To the untrained ear, it can even occasionally sound like she's just singing in a totally random way. In fact, it can be rather difficult at times. So do not expect to find easy-to-get-into song structures. Of course, this is still latter-day Björk music. It is extremely heartbreaking to get through all of this with her. Björk is extremely touching as she sings about all kinds of intimate details that deal with the end of her relationship. This is by far the best part of the album. The first few tracks even, without spoiling anything, take place before the breakup. It actually chronicles the end of the relationship during its first six tracks. As a reaction to Biophilia's rather esoteric themes, Vulnicura focuses on her breakup with the man she was with for about fifteen years. Then came Biophilia - an album so pretentious and overambitious that it made me think that it just was not worth following her with almost religious devotion anymore. Volta was quite a bit better as it delivered singles that were rather worthy of her 90's output. Medulla wasn't bad at all but it still felt like it was missing something. But that still does not completely excuse her weaker output from Medulla to Biophilla I don't think it's less beloved just because she's a woman. She obviously would be even more respected if she were a man. Björk is an amazing artist that deserves more respect in the industry. ![]()
